I associate Jia's grant landscape painting with visual perception of watching "Avatar". The 3D movie impresses audience with a sense of open space and a stunning grandness, which is hard to experience in real life. Standing on the top of mountains or overlooking from a plane in sky, we perhaps have the pleasure of holding all mountains in a glance, but that sense of space is departing from us. The visual perception in Avatar is totally different. With the camera lens passing by, not only the deep and profound space is presented, but also head-oning oppressive sensation. Limited by the point of sight, we hardly have this kind of visual experience in real life. That is why we have a brand new visual experience when watching "Avatar".
Ancients valued expression of artistic conception of painting. What's artistic conception? It's a spatial illusion triggered by pictures. Viewers create a set expectation of space atmosphere by watching pictures. So traditional landscape painting pursues "the School of Three far" (high and far, deep and far, near to far) to achieve a visual spiritual depth, with which, they can not only satisfy the basic need of watch, but also imagine "touring" even "living" in the picture. Though traditional Chinese painting is as solid as the Western one, it requires more on spacious sense and room for imagination.
But in the thousands of year's history of landscape painting, no one except Mr.Jia can accomplish such large spatial scale masterpiece. Here "large"refers to the state, not the size of the painting. His painting is so large that you have to change the way of watching - touring in every part of the work instead of holding all in a glance. Viewers need to wander and watch carefully, one scene after another, like touring in the mysteries nature, which is mentioned by the ancient as a level of appreciation. Of course, "tour" here is still a way of watching, a shift way from "watch" to "visual roam". His painting always attracts viewers to a scene and to roam in landscape. It is fair to say that Jia's spacious landscape painting has changed the viewer's way of watching. The visual roam experience is the reason why I call Jia's painting as "hyperspace landscape painting". When watching Jia's paining, we get a visual experience like watching a 3D movie, which we have never experienced in other paintings. That's what Jia's contribution to the development of Chinese painting.
Mr.Jia was born in Taihang mountains area and was cultivated by grand landscape since he was a boy. His masterpieces, based on mountain frame and space sense of Taihang Mountains, are re-construction of that in grand landscape painting with creative imagination. Jia's landscape paintings have irreplaceable value owing to his uncanny constructing skills of artistic conception.
